Moving to Rome

Hi!

My name is Liz, I'm 34 and will be taking the plunge and leaving London for Rome in February 2010.
I am really excited about the big move, and looking forward to making new friends. I don't speak any Italian(yet)...but hoping to go to a language school whilst I'm out there.
If anyone is in/or going to Rome around that time, I would love to hear from you!

well I forgive you, but only because we Lizzies are well known for our kind and forgiving nature (NOT!).
Anyway I have been coming to Rome on and off since I was 19. I met my Italian stallion (I think I would say pony, or maybe Shetland....u know those really tiny ones...) Anyway now I have lost the thread...
Oh yeah, I met my OH nearly 10 years ago, and I moved to Rome permanently at least 6 years ago. WE have 3 kids, so I can't say my social life is exactly exciting, but I do have a nice life when I am not nursing the sick and moody!
My Italian is OK but should be alot better. You should enrol in a language school as soon as you get here...u won't regret it!
I presume you are goign to be based in the centre of Rome? SO come on..tell us what has provoked this decision to come???????

I can imagine how hard it is sometimes, being away fom home, and all the ups and downs
I'm sure I will have up and down days... missing friends and family..it's inevitable and normal like you say. But I hope all the good days will far outweigh the down days!

So, it's not true what they say about Italian Stallions then....Oh how my dream has been shattered...lol!

I'm going to be living not far from Vatican City, so quite central I believe.
I 've had enough of the UK and have been harping on for years about 'moving abroad' but have always some how found an excuse to put it off...until now that is! And Italy is just an amazing country, so I thought why not!
I have been looking at schools to learn Italian...but sooooo many to choose from! Any recommendations?

How old are your kids?

Italians are like any other men in the world, only a bit stranger...
Physically they are fine, even quite pleasant. Unfortunately the devastatingly handsome ones know it and have conceited personalities, so u can't fancy them once u have understood what is going on behind the mask! They are far more duplicit than British men who are more 'what u see is what u get'. The trick is not to pick any up in the typical touristy areas...they will only be slimy and serial shaggers (unless of course u don't mind that!).

Anyway as for language schools, now if u look on the expats site I read that there is actually an Italian course run near Termiini I think that is free. Apart from thst I don't know as it is nearly 20 years since I went to a language school here!

Be warned Italy is stuck in the 50s ....
Oh my kids are 2, 3 and 8....

I had a look on expats and one of the members recommended the below school. She said it was near the Colosseum, which will be a bit of a walk from the Vatican but easily do-able and you will be fit!

I have had a couple of Italian boyfriends...and wow..what an experience that was...I thought women were supposed to be the emotional ones!
At least they are nicely tanned compared to British men!

I have a job lined up (just nanny work)and will be doing that until September time. Will see how I get on in that time, and then decide if I shall stay permanently, although at this moment in time I really have no intention of EVER moving back to the UK.

And the family you are nannying for? How did u find the job?

I found the job through an au pair website...can't remember which one! The family are Anglo-Italian and they seem really nice, so hopefully I wont have too many problems work wise!

Sounds like u'll be fine, and u r bound to meet lots of foreigners in that location. You will have no time to feel lonely with all that site seeing to do.

My name is Jessica and I wanted to say hello to everyone! I am a San Francisco native, but have been living in Rome on and (mostly) off for the past 10 years. I still love this town and everything it has to offer... it's really an incredibly beautiful to live!

Lizzie -- I wanted to give you some advice on what I think is the best and cheapest place to take Italian language courses in Rome. It's a little bit of a well kept secret, most Anglo-Americans don't know the school is around. It's called the Scuola Danta Alighieri (don't confuse it with CLI Dante Alighieri) and it's a state-run school that exists in Rome and around the world to promote learning the Italian language. Here is their site:

They are located in the city center, close to the Pantheon and Parliament (Montecitorio) - so it won't be so hard to get there from the Vatican area, you might even be able to walk it. I've taken classes there a few different times and I think for the value, it's a really great school. Lots of students from around the world.

Just a respiratory virus... I am now extremely bored with the long recovery time and not being able to do all the nice things I planned to do wtih the kids during the holidays.
