haha yes, i certainly did yesterday. I am not surprised though. I really liked it since I love politics, discussions but it got really outta hand! every time i wanted to start a new thread , i would hesitate because i felt like i would "offend" someone ( and there are alot of hardcore "someones" ) on that forum.

Claire was smart to start this forum because i feel completely at ease here. Some people at expats needed a cold shower/ hug/ or who knows Should we talk about expats in italy? Icon_rolleyes .. the sad thing is some of the most helpful people there were the most antagonistic..i think cristina just got sick of dealing with all the complaints.

Yes that's true.
It's a big shame because it used to be so great there.
I think I will like it here better!

the sad thing is some of the most helpful people there were the most antagonistic..
I think we must be thinking of the same person!

Razz So true...or a person always wanting to be right!
Everyone has their own experiences and it colors their perception or the way they view life. It doesn't mean they are right or wrong just different.

Some people don't get that.

Thats why i started this site to be honest alot of the bickering was done by men which is weird becuase its usually us women who like a good moan! lol

I do like the ecpat site dont get me wrong, but there seems to be an inner group to it and i was tired of waiting 5 days for a response to my posts or just getting ignored!

I wanted to have a nice friendly place, that was fun, nice chatter, sharing experience, making friends etc! Like a Star @ heaven

I started posting there a couple of days ago and actually got some responses, whereas before there was nothing. I also quite enjoyed some of the hot headed discussions, but couldn't beleive how agitated they got. Is it really really closing..and if so when???

A friend told me that this was done before (threatening to close it down). It must have happened when I was off it.
It will be sad to see it go.

Are any of you on facebook? A few people on expats said they were on Facebook so I joined today as JoAnne Isgro.

I'm on facebook too but I am Elizabeth Ward and there are millions of us...Clare can find me thru my email address. I will have to look for you lot coz I think you will be easier to find. The thing is it is nicer like this, on this forum, as otherwise our conversations will get lost in the other chit chat with non-expats ...eeek! What a Face

you know i am all over expats in italy and here .. and i have to say that i feel so comfortable writing my true feelings about things on this site.. i have noticed that STILL people are getting all huffy and puffy on expats (men) .. when someone disagrees with them! i was reading a thread about a girl who was looking to teaching english and asked for advice and some guy had to go in and write this :

Posted 31 October 2009 23:03 Hide Post
A different point of view might be, of course, that it’s not really a ‘job’ to simply speak your language. I know you’ll tell me that you have qualifications, certifications, experience and a real commitment to teaching English, but that’s not really the point, is it?
The point is that most people struggle to acquire some kind of marketable skill some employer will be willing to pay a decent wage for. The key word is ‘struggle’ here.

Basically, people on this thread are complaining that a ‘skill’ acquired because they’ve been born in the USA as opposed to, for instance, Brazil is not enough to make a living.
Well, yes. It’s not enough to make a living.
I find there's some sort of morality here, and I'm sure that if you weren't personally involved in this you'd find some sort of morality too.

I thought you might want to adopt this point of view to set things in their right perspective.

Ok, I’ll take my coat.

wtf??? i just dont understand people like that..

The worst was on one of the childbirth threads where a male poster poked his head in to say what a great medical care experience he'd had up north in one of the richest cities in Italy. As if to say that Poster X's terrible childbirth experience in naples was invalid because his knee surgery near the Swiss border had gone so well! Rolling Eyes

That teaching thread made me furious, but I didn't dare get involved, because the man in question is one who will never EVER stop arguing. One of those who wins arguments by virtue of being the last person standing. Grrr. Various people tried valiantly to get it back on track, but he just wouldn't let it go.

It's far easier to get involved over here, I must say. I like that there aren't very many of us, because it means that we can actually have a conversation!

I agree, much nicer environment.
Think we could do with some good topic starters though, as I see there are 44 + members and only a few of us getting involved. I log on everyday, coz I work from home ...it would be nice to have a bit more to respond to! I try to respond to most things coz the site is new and I want it to succeed..but I notice my name is on everything..I am sick of the site of me! Should we talk about expats in italy? Icon_redface

I just wanna add that I see Georgette, for eg is a good topic starter. (And Claire of course). Maybe new members don't realise, but I, for one, love reading other people's stories and opinions, no body should be feeling too shy to contribute ! Should we talk about expats in italy? Icon_smile

yeah i think alot of people enjoy being lurkers and not putting themselves out there but hey this is a very friendly forum! lol btw Katja, i did write something bk to that A-hole on the teaching forum and he sent me a personal message about freedom of speech or the fact that us anglofiles expect everyone to agree with us.. it was kind of funny actually.. i stepped in because i felt sorry for the girl who posted the question since that same a-hole did that to me when i was talking about my future MIL being obsessed about cleaning... i know with forums maybe people feel a little shy at first but lets see what happens... in the meantime more topics..

Haha! Oh, the IRONY!

He clearly has a massive chip on his shoulder, which is ridiculous. Why bother to learn English (and his English is very good) and join an Expats forum if he resents us so much? Silly man.

I think expats might work better if they have photos. right now it is quite impersonal, you can make cutting remarks and hide behind your pseudo name. (Then again, in his case, he would probably have been attacked in the street by now! )
