Hi, I am new to this forum and am trying to find out somethings about living in Italy. I am american and live in VA, my dream is to move to Italy in 9-12 months for possibly 1 yr. This has always been my dream and now my kids are grown it is time for me. I have been trying to do lots of research about living, working and adjusting to a foreign country. I found this forum and hope to get some good info and possibly pick your minds. What is the best way to find a place to live over there? How can you work if you are American? Can you work over there without being part of the EU? DO I need to get a Visa if I am going to travel there and possibly another country? I guess what I really need is Italy 101 class. LOL Thanks for any info you can provide. Mary

Hi and welcome!!! I am British and so do not have the same problems about work etc.. I think Georgette will probably know something helpful. Otherwise there is another expats site that is very informative for this kind of thing. Don't go away though.....we are good on the emotional support and the laughs! Very Happy
Justa thoguht though, is taht if you are only coming for a year it working 'in regular' may not be so important for you.

hello there! I am your resident american helper haha... well I'll tell you what.. dont even move here and look for work without fixing the visa situation.. impossible and risky is the best way to say it.. take it from someone who is just now getting her red tape figured out.. best advice is... get an elective resident visa ( gotta prove you have the money to live here ) OR a student visa ( 1 year and not just a language school ) .

with the student visa you can legally work for up to 20 hours a week, so do that for a year, see if italy is worth it and see what happens! You can teach english, work for a hotel/bar/ ect.. its by no means easy finding work ( gotta be creative ) but if you got the legal stuff taken care of your halfway there! best bets for work are florence, rome or milan... ( especially if you don't speak perfect italian ) ... good luck!!!!!!!!!1
