I just finished reading the discussion about the Florence Monster (it started off about books) and then went to the web to see what it was all about. I remember my first trip to Florence way back in 1990, I was in my early twenties.

I was travelling alone on a Contiki tour bus and we stayed at an old villa near the woods. A group of us girls were walking back to the villa and we were swarmed by young boys who tried to drag us into the nearby woods! Scared, we turned around and started to walk back to the Piazza and then jumped into a taxi back to our villa!

Has anyone ever had a similar experience?

Yes - when I first moved to rome in 2004 I had a couple of experiences like that. One time I was walking home by myself from a party - not very far. Anyway a carload of guys were shouting at me to get into their car - I was petrified and they followed me along the kerb all the way back to my house - shouting 'hey get into the car!!" and vairous unprintable things. It was very strange and disturbing. When I got to my house one of them got out of the car and came up to try to persuade me to get into their car rather than go inside. Mad They seriously seemed to think that a lone woman walking home by herself would get into a car full of men and go home with them... Maybe they thought I was a prostitute since I'm obviously foreign? Who knows...

I had a lot of really bad experienced with men trying to touch me, follow me or sexually harassing me on the street when I first moved here. My theory was that it was because I'm so obviously a foreigner and so tall as my Italian female friends don't seem to have the same problem. I have a baby now which really keeps em away though. Things are totally different now. Also I'm nearing 40... cyclops

Geez! That is pretty scary! I try not to go out too late at night alone even though Genoa seems pretty safe. I do remember those boys were touching our hair and our skin like it was strange to them and we kept swatting their hands away. But I have not had any problems here in Genoa. Mostly I get ignored. But there are more immigrants here than there was 20 years ago too.

People ask me if I am Russian or Swedish but otherwise thankfully they leave me alone. I'm sure my wedding ring has something to do with it. But older men check me out more often now. It's like I'm a magnet for old farts, haha. They probably think they've got a shot now that I am over 40, hehe. Razz

People always ask me if I'm Polish or Ukrainian. I guess being tall and blonde and living at Piazza vittorio (immigrant neighbourhood) that's what they think of first. I actually am half Swedish but no one has ever asked me if i'm Swedish - not sure why since I look like my dad.

I think the fact that I don't go out at night much now with a baby at home, the wedding ring, the baby and the fact that I'm older has a lot to do with why those guys don't harass me anymore. But I also modified the way I dress -I dress kind of dowdy now and fit in more (ie no shorts or short skirts in the summer - has anyone else noticed that Italian women don't wear them??)

Yes, sadly I have also adjusted my style of dressing too. I wear more practical shoes because of the hills and streets are not even and I don't want to break my neck! But also to detract any unwanted attention. If I wore half the clothes I used to wear in the Caribbean I would be attacked or propositioned. Most of the local women are super conservative. And the ones that do dare to wear low cut tops and short skirts look out of place and ridiculous to me.

I've always had the Elton John attitude of if you've got it flaunt it, but also there is a right time and place and a wrong one. Walking downtown wearing a mini skirt or to work is the wrong place, at the beach on vacation I say go for it. There's nothing wrong with looking sexy, just be wise about what, where and when.

I've seen a few women in the office here that really push those limits and I think wow, if you were in Canada you would be sent home to change! affraid
