1 what I read in November! on 30th November 2009, 2:20 am

hey everyone just finished a few books that I would like to share:

I recommend "The 19th Wife". Based on the outlaw sect The Firsts ( broke up from the Mormon religion to continue practicing polygamy. Veryyyyy fascinating book since its intertwines the present group and the past and how it all began.. I liked it!

I also finished "The Gargoyle". It was little too Chuck Palahniuk for me .. the story was fascinating though so if you like a blend of fantasy and reality , go for it!

last but not least I read the "reluctant fundamentalist" ( I think this has been a best seller for some time ) .. he has a way with words that much I can attest but parts of the book really annoyed me and I thought if they changed the character a little more he would have had more of a reason to harbor the feelings he did.. see for yourself!

happy reading! [b]

Ohh, I miss reading. While I was in Rome last weekend I read a really trashy novel from the hostel's bookshelf. It was dreadful, but it was just so nice to be able to read something in English! When I go home at Christmas I really have to stock up on books to keep me going for a while.

Was it on here that there was talk of setting up a bookcrossing scheme? I'd love to get involved in that kind of thing. English books here are so expensive (and I'd probably have to go to Rome to get them, anyway, which is a 10 hour journey!), so if we could all share the love that would be lots of fun.

Thanks for sharing, Georgette. Smile

Katya
I would have been interested in the book share but I think the posting fees and the 2 hours queuing in the post office put me off. DO u not have any second hand book stores where u r? Or you could try amazon? I use cd_wow.com that charge normal prces for books and cds. Sometimes they charge for delivery on books, but they often have special offers where u get delivery free. I use them alot.

I'm in the back of beyond here, so no English bookstores, unfortunately. Not that I've found, anyway, although I shall carry on looking.

I probably will resort to Amazon sooner or later - it's just that I'm wary of the post here. Letters seem to be fine, but my friend in England has sent me 2 parcels, neither of which has reached me. I take comfort in the fact that, considering they probably contained Marmite and cowpats, the postie that opened them will have been mightily disappointed with his loot! Twisted Evil

I've never actually used Amazon..but I know that CD_wow will send u out a replacement if u don't get the package---it has happened a couple of times to me. SO u could try it as an experiment just the once----?

I just ordered from amazon.co.fr (I think that is the site, it's the french version). Let's see if I get them. The post office here is an experience too. It wouldn't be too bad if they had a line for the post office and one for the banca.

I've been using amazon.co.uk for the last year and some. So far so good (I may be jinxing myself though, as I'm waiting on something now that's taking a bit longer to arrive). I'm fairly confident using them as Amazon will refund or replace anything that doesn't make it here.

I also ship to my inlaws as my postman's a twit who will leave parcels that don't require a signature sitting on the side of the road instead of bothering to buzz me on the interfone. Evil or Very Mad

Amazon's really been a lifesaver for me (even got a face cream this week that isn't available here). Even though we have quite a few bookstores nearby with English sections, the selections are pathetic, usually consisting of the classics that are the required reading for English students, and romance novels. Both are fine every now and again, but going from Bronte to a bodice ripper is enough to send one over the edge. Oh, haha, there's another bookshop in a commercial centre near me that always has a few erotic books in English (like five or so when their entire English selection is maybe 20!). Haha, wonder who's doing the ordering there?

I knowwhat you mean about poor selection. I love in FLORENCE which is english expat community of Italy but still i see the same boring books over and over again.. mayve i dont want to read twilight .. argh! and they'r expensive.. like 12 13 euros and i go to the paperback exchange rarely because the ones i like are always too pricey even there but the bodice ripping ones seem to be cheap lol..

so yes amazon uk is a must!

I know right?! When Twilight was the last thing I wanted to read it was EVERYWHERE! Then, when I finally caved in and decided to read it [blush], it was NOWHERE to be found and I had to resort to Amazon. Ha. Pathetic!!

I just read the whole Twilight series... My 15 yr old friend leant them to me. They were a bit daft but in the absence of anything more riveting to read, I quite enjoyed them...although I thought the first half of the last book was pushing the boundaries of bizarre a bit too far (not giving anything away here though)!!

Haha, yeah, they are a bit daft, but I just tried to get past the writing and enjoy the premise. Ending up liking them a lot more than I thought I would. I agree with you about the first half of the last book... though any escape from moany Jacob was ok by me!

The first half of the last book was getting a bit less than wholesome...amd I wasn't really sure it was suitable reading for a 15 yr old!

Did u notice her characters were always pressing their lips together in a line?

Hahaha, I've only just noticed this!

No, I didn't notice that bit, but I swear if the author used the word incredulous or any variation thereof one more time, I would have tracked her her down and made her suffer!

ha ha. It's been an age now since I read the books, but I just saw the second film (New Moon?), which was an improvement on the first film...much more jolly!
