SO how did u all meet your other halves? I'll start the ball rolling...
I came to Italy for the first time, when I was 18. I fell in love with Rome and visited it over the years. When I was 28 I gave up everything (job, rental, boyfriend) and came to Rome to study at LA SApienza before starting a Phd back home. In the meantime I met Giuliano and we became good friends! When I got back home I realised I was pregnant (ooppss!). Now I am living in Rome permanently with 3 kids...I guess I got carried away (never finished the phd!). I have to say I often fantasize about moving back to the UK, but it is a bit of a nightmare at the moment...with the financial crisis and the swine flu!!

I came to Italy for the first time after leaving southern France. I wanted something new so I decided to come to Italy. My first impression of Italy was not a good one! I arrived at the FCO airport and needed assistance as I had never been here before..I got none, I asked many people and only got rude, sexual advances or no responses. UNTIL I see this beautiful lanky, Adrian Brody esque man at another baggage claim from mine that I casually walked up to and asked for assistance. To my surprise he spoke perfect English with a beautiful Roman accent and was more than willing to assistant me. Needless to say my two week trip to Italy became 3 months and we have been traveling back to the Sates and Italy ever since..its been about 2.5 years now. *At the moment we are still deciding on where to settle*
We are still very much in love and we always feel like giddy-teenagers :-)

that is soooooooooooo romantic I love you

I can hardly say we had love at first sight...in fact I only went out with my boyfriend because I was coming out of a 6 year relationship anmd just wanted to hang out with someone, he was the same...not looking for a relationship...somewhere along the line we lost the strada! He's not like any of my other boyfriends...but maybe I had made bad choices, maybe that's why we work?! tongue

well i have to join in on this italian boyfriend? such a cliche! Herz .. I was 21 just came back from teaching english in China and I was SUPPOSED to go to England ( i had a "not so cliche" lol .. love for the english ..men) but last minute they changed ( study abroad program) my location to Florence instead of London. I was sooo not excited because I associated Italians with people like my mother ( verrry spanish, irrational, emotional , and just not LOGICAL) and the "guidos" you see in NYC/ Boston.. I just got out of a 3 year relationship with my ex with whom I moved to L.A. from Texas and sooo not looking for love.. especially after all of the "ciao bellas" or better yet txts like this " they say that true love was on the titanic, but.. i think its between you and me" this along with a text drawing of a boat italian boyfriend? such a cliche! Lol .

anywho I met my "amore" not at the supermarket, not locked eyes over a silent film but rather at a student party hehe.. Him and his friends crashed one which my school was sponsering at a local nightclub.. I tried to give him the wrong number but he did the whole " let me give you a squillo" ahh. craft one my italian! when we met up the next day for a "giro in citta" , i was shocked about how handsome , tall and just FUNNY he was.. His english eas bad, my italian was bad but it was a whole lot more fun learning the language with him rather than my school where most of the girls were scared of italian men..
so here we are . 4 years this October!!!!!!!!!

I don't know if I count because we are married.
I met him at my cousin's house in 1983. I have been stuck with him ever since! lol
We decided 4 years ago to move to Sicily. He has been wanting to return home for 20 years. The first time he brought it up was when I was pregnant with our oldest. I said no way. He has a sister that lives here in Pennsylvania, that's how he and his parents came over in 1974. They left after a year and he stayed. He was 15.
His sister and I don't get along - the whole Italian MIL thing only from his sister...
In 2005, we started talking about leaving and I said let's go. We had a lot of paperwork to do with the consulate and we finally got our house sold - settlement on Oct. 19th.
I got my Italian citizenship in June of this year. So no visa for me!

What an adventure! I presume you have visited Sicily? And how do your kids feel about it? Do they speak Italian?

No, I haven't ever visited! We never had the money to spend.
It's going to be a big adventure.
Our oldest (19) left home last December to live with her boyfriend, then came back for a month in May and left in June again. She will not be coming.
Our younger daughter is in 5th grade and somedays is excited to leave. She only does Italian if we bug her. We keep telling her she will be sorry.
I have been studying Italian for 3 years, doing online programs like Rosetta Stone and Byki and doing bookwork. I am hoping it is in there and will work when we get there.

so that's what Rosetta stone is!
I expect when your daughter needs to speak, in order to have friends, it will kick in. You are SO brave to go having never been...what faith you have in your husband! Anyway it's not the third world so you will all be fine...watch out for the culture shock...these Italians are crazy! (mainly ina nice way!) affraid

We have been married for over 24 years.
I hope and pray that he doesn't ditch me after we move! lol

I think Sophia will pick it up quickly. She still has a sponge brain!

ha! If my partner dumped me he would probably be doing me a favour, no one else would put up with the hours he does, keep house and still put up with all the complaining! ha!
