Learn the Secrets to Getting Younger-Looking Eyes

Want brighter, more youthful-looking eyes? Here are the goods on getting rid of the dark circles, puffiness, and fine lines that may be giving you a tired, aged appearance.

One of the most common questions my patients ask me — whether they're celebrities or civilians — is how to get younger-looking eyes. Dark circles, puffiness, and fine lines can make you look tired and run down, even when you're not. Since your eyes are the windows to your soul, be sure to make them as fresh and clear as you can.

Dark circles get worse when you're deprived of sleep, so aim for at least seven hours of sleep a night. Sun damage, freckles, and superficial skin discoloration can also contribute to dark circles. If this is the case, the discoloration tends to get darker in the summer and to fade in the winter. This type of pigmentation can respond to over-the-counter botanical skin brighteners.

Try using Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer SPF 30 under your eyes. It contains soybean extract to help lighten uneven pigmentation, and mineral light diffusers to help brighten dark circles. Just make sure you rub it in well so it doesn't look pasty or greasy.

Under-eye bags can get even puffier when you're bloated, so avoid salting your food or eating salty snacks — because excess salt can make your body retain water. During the day, when you're standing, the excess fluid settles in your legs, so only your feet get swollen. At night, however, when you're lying down, some of the fluid is redistributed into your face, making your eye bags especially puffy. Try sleeping on two pillows to help the fluid drain from your face. Seasonal allergies and sinus problems can also contribute to puffy eyes, so if you have either of these conditions, ask your doctor if an antihistamine might benefit you.

Fine lines can be aggravated by squinting, so be sure to wear sunglasses in addition to sunscreen when you're outdoors. At night, use an eye cream that contains antioxidants and/or retinol to help build collagen in the delicate eye area. Beauty on a Budget
If you've spent all weekend partying (or up with the baby) and you have to get up for an early-morning meeting, fake a good night's sleep by putting your eye cream in the fridge the night before. As soon as you wake up, dab the chilled cream under and around your eyes. The cool temperature soothes tired eyes and constricts blood vessels to depuff swollen lids.
